Core Features

EdgeTariff has been designed to assist merchants in making their international trade journey as seamless as possible by providing a host of beneficial tools, which revolve around the 3 core features of:
- Expected Duties & Taxes (EDT) – shows the expected duties and taxes on a merchant’s ecommerce store checkout, so overseas buyers can make an informed choice before buying
- Product Pre-Classification (PPC) – classifies a merchant’s product(s) with Harmonized System (HS) codes, which enables destination country customs authorities to recognise the goods in the consignment and assign the correct duties and taxes to the shipment
- Restricted Party Screening (RPS) – lets merchants screen overseas buyers to ensure there aren’t any global trade compliance restrictions on the buyer
1) Expected Duties & Taxes (EDT) Calculator
The EDT calculator within EdgeTariff adds transparency and therefore, gives overseas buyers the confidence in making a purchase from the merchant by detailing the:
- Cost of the goods
- Shipping costs to the destination country
- Destination country specific import custom duties and taxes
- Total landed cost of the purchase
This information is shown on the WooCommerce checkout BEFORE the overseas buyer makes the purchase, which gives them an informed choice.
Expected Duties and Taxes (EDT) functionality is driven by the Harmonised System (HS) codes, which are pre-assigned to each product(s) being shipped from an origin to destination country. EDT can be performed on products having HS codes at the 6 digit (minimum) or 10-digit (or more) level.
The benefits of having the EdgeTariff’s EDT calculator in a WooCommerce store ensure:
- NO unexpected after-purchase charges for overseas customers
- Reduced buyer’s remorse, i.e., retained customers
- Fewer returned or refused goods from overseas buyers
- Merchant collects ALL monies UPFRONT before shipping
- Selling & growing internationally, for merchants, is as easy as selling domestically
- Delivery Terms of Delivery, Duty Paid (DDP) are supported
2) Product Pre-Classification (PPC)
BEFORE listing and/or selling any product on a WooCommerce store, the merchant must ensure that their product(s) have at least a universally recognised Commodity or 6-digit Harmonized System (HS6) code. HS6 codes identify and categorise a product according to the World Customs Organisation (WCO) and World Trade Organisation (WTO) standards.
Beyond the first 6-digit (from the left), a HS code is extended by each destination country’s customs authorities to 8, 10, 12 or more digits (and letters) – referred to as the Fully Qualified (FQ) code. FQ codes allow country specific customs treatments of a product. Put another way, a country applies (calculates) product duties and taxes at the FQ code level (not the HS6 level, which is only a broad product categorisation/identification level).
The Product Pre-Classification (PPC) service, built into EdgeTariff, allows merchants to submit their products for classification to both the HS6 and FQ code levels. Having Products Pre-Classified (PPC) to the FQ level allows for:
- Accurate Expected Duties and Taxes (EDT) calculations shown on the checkout
- Faster customs processing when a Commercial Invoices show FQ codes
- Reduced risk of misclassification because of destination country specific classification, rather than just a universal classification
3) Restricted Party Screening (RPS)
Merchants can use the EdgeTariff Restricted Party Screening (RPS) service to ensure that they are not breaking any international trade compliance regulations, by shipping their goods to an overseas buyer. The RPS service is built into EdgeCTP/EdgeTariff and is manually initiated by the merchant within their WooCommerce store admin.
RPS checks each overseas buyer details against 33 live global denied party lists for any restrictions, which helps merchants to:
- Avoid legal penalties
- Prevent shipments from being delayed or blocked
- Stay compliant with global trade laws
- Reduce risk of brand reputational damage
