Email Essentials vastly reduces the chances of your emails being marked as spam or being rejected. Originally a debugging tool, it has grown into a full-fledged email enhancement plugin.
Please note that this plugin is not a "we support any type of transport" Email plugin. For other protocols than SMTP, but rather to enhance the email sending capabilities of WordPress.
If you need to send emails with other protocols than SMTP, this plugin is not for you. You might want to look at plugins like Post SMTP (not affiliated).
And since version 6.0.0, after more than 10 years of development and internal use, this plugin is now a FOSS plugin, meaning it is free to use, modify and distribute under the GPLv2 license.

Is this a replacement for plugins that use other transport than SMTP?
No, it enhances WordPress email sending but only supports SMTP. You CAN use both plugins, but you must be careful to configure them properly to not conflict with each other.
Is it free?
Email Essentials has always been free, but has never been open source. Since version 6.0.0, it is now a FOSS plugin, meaning it is free to use, modify and distribute under the GPLv2 license.

- New filter:
acato_email_essentials_spf_vetoallows vetoing the SPF lookup for a sender domain. A vetoed domain is never allowed, regardless of its SPF record, so the configured fallback sender is used instead. Use this when an SPF record whitelists a (shared) hosting server, so not every website on that server may send in name of that domain. - The admin interface shows when the SPF check of the default sender is vetoed.
- [internal] Acato: the SPF lookup for acato.nl is vetoed, unless the website itself is an acato.nl website.
- [internal] Bugfix: the
acato_email_essentials_website_root_pathfilter was registered with a non-existing callback, causing a PHP Fatal error when applied.
- [internal] Bugfix: deprecation handler used an incompatible method signature for Plugin::validate_ip_listed_in_spf(), causing a PHP Fatal error since 6.0.10. Not released to WordPress.org.
- Bugfix: The SPF check could hang in an endless loop (until PHP timed out) for some SPF records. An IPv6 address containing "a:" (e.g. ip6:2a02:2770::21a:4aff:fe8a:db9c) was mistaken for an a:/mx: mechanism, and the resulting lookup of a hostname without dots made the Cloudflare DNS wildcard fallback retry "*" forever. Both are fixed.
- Bugfix: SPF include-chains are now protected against include loops and limited to 10 levels deep, as per RFC 7208.
- Bugfix: Resolving the SMTP host is now protected against CNAME loops (a > b > a) and limited to 10 CNAME hops.
- Emergency patch held, transformed into documented filter without default
- Emergency patch: for flowmailer SMTP users, the SPF check would report no-good, as the IP used for SMTP is not in their SPF record. This patch spoofs the SMTP IP into the SPF record so the SPF succeeds and emails are sent out again. This patch will removed once FlowMailer fixes their SPF record.
- Bugfix: Prevent potential XSS vulnerability. Thanks to PatchStack / JunHee CHO for reporting this.
- Improvement: Tracker can now serve an actual 1x1 transparent pixel instead of serving a 404.
- Feature: Tracker can be disabled while retaining the email-history feature. No more "Email Opened" status, but also, no tracker for privacy.
- Re-release of 6.0.4 because I forgot to update the Stable Tag.
