Not every AI tool embeds this yet, and re-saving, editing or screenshotting an image removes it. Images without a usable signal are marked "Unknown" so you can review and correct them manually.

Enfants IMG Performer checks every upload for signals that an image is AI-generated (C2PA / Content Credentials manifests, EXIF metadata, heuristics). Detected images get a visible label on the front end and a machine-readable marker written into the file. You can correct edge cases manually in the media library - for example when an image is AI-generated but obviously artificial and does not need a visible label.

The plugin reads existing C2PA / Content Credentials manifests on upload and writes a machine-readable marker into the original image and into every image size WordPress generates, embedded as an XMP packet using the IPTC "Digital Source Type" property. This keeps the label intact in the thumbnails, where WordPress normally strips metadata. It is not a cryptographically signed C2PA manifest - producing one would require certification through the official C2PA Conformance Programme, which this plugin does not perform.

You use your own API key, there is no credit system and no cap. Existing media can be processed in bulk.

Yes, for the EU member states. RGAA (France), Ley 11/2023 (Spain) and BaFG (Austria) are national implementations of the same EU directive as Germany's BFSG, sharing the same underlying WCAG 2.1 AA alt-text requirement that IMG Performer's Pro alt-text generator already meets. Switzerland is not an EU member and the EAA doesn't apply there directly; a national revision of the Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz (BehiG) covering digital accessibility for private providers is still before parliament, with earliest entry into force in 2027.

ShortPixel and Imagify process images in their cloud and require an account with a credit quota. IMG Performer runs locally on your server, with no account and no limit for conversion. It also labels AI-generated images for EU AI Act Art. 50 in the same plugin.

Article 50 splits the duties between two roles. Providers of generative AI systems, for example image generators, must mark their output in a machine-readable way. Deployers, which includes any business that publishes AI images on its website, must disclose deepfakes: AI-generated or AI-manipulated images that resemble real people, places, objects or events and could be mistaken for authentic. The disclosure must be clear and perceivable by people, at the latest at the first exposure. This is a general summary and not legal advice.

Article 50 applies since 2 August 2026. For website operators (deployers) there is no transition period. Providers of generative AI systems that were already on the market before that date have until 2 December 2026 to add the machine-readable marking (Article 111(4), as amended by the Digital Omnibus). Images published before 2 August 2026 do not have to be labeled retroactively.

Photorealistic AI images that make real-looking people, places or events appear authentic (deepfakes) need a visible disclosure. Clearly artificial illustrations and icons usually do not, standard edits such as cropping or exposure do not, and clearly artistic or satirical works need only a discreet notice. When in doubt, label the image. In IMG Performer you decide per image in the Media Library.

For website operators, metadata alone is generally not enough. The guidelines of the European Commission on Article 50 state that deployers cannot rely on the machine-readable marking added by the provider, because people cannot perceive it. IMG Performer therefore writes the marker into the image files and can show a visible label on the image.

It supports you, but it cannot guarantee compliance. Labeling works in two steps: automatic detection on upload, where the image carries provenance data (such as C2PA manifests, EXIF hints or signatures of known AI tools), and manual classification in the Media Library for edge cases and for images without provenance data. Whether an image is a deepfake is your decision as the operator. The plugin does not replace legal advice.

The free plugin only applies to new uploads. The separately available PRO plugin can scan an existing media library and label it retroactively. With PRO you can also change the look of the visible label (position, colour, contrast, custom label image); in the free plugin the badge can be switched on or off.
