Gateways that verify or pre-authorize the card at sign-up (Stripe, Payrexx, Braintree, Mollie and others) keep doing so, so the first payment after the trial runs without further action from the customer. A trial started with the coupon also survives checkout retries after a cancelled or failed payment.
