Create word-grouping puzzles and embed them in any page or post. Players see 16 words and must sort them into four hidden groups of four, in the style of the popular "Connections" word game.
Palette Word Connections is an independent plugin. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to The New York Times Company or its games.
- Four groups, from easiest to hardest, each with its own colour
- Tap to select four words and submit; wrong guesses shake, correct groups are revealed
- "One away!" message when three of the four selected words belong together
- Mistakes allowed per game (1–15, default 10), shown as dots
- Optional hint button per game: highlights two words from the same group, once
- Shuffle and deselect buttons, and "Play again" at the end
- Progress is kept in the player's browser, so a page reload doesn't restart the game
- Optional reveal hint per group, shown after the group is solved
- Per-game language: Hebrew (RTL) or English (LTR), independent of the site language; new games start in the site language
- Warns you when a word appears in more than one group
- Live preview on the game's edit screen
- Shortcode with a copy button in the games list
- Group colours configurable under Palette Word Connections → Settings
- Elementor widget (works in the Elementor editor too), plus a shortcode for any editor or theme

- Upload the
palette-word-connectionsfolder to/wp-content/plugins/ - Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu
- Go to Palette Word Connections in the admin menu and add a game: a title, four groups (a name and four words each), and the game settings (language, mistakes allowed, hint)
- Publish the game
- Copy its shortcode from the games list, e.g.
[word_connections id="123"], or drag the Palette Word Connections widget in Elementor

Do I need Elementor?
No. The shortcode works in the block editor, the classic editor and theme templates.
Can I show an English game on a Hebrew site (or the other way round)?
Yes. Each game has its own language setting, which controls the game's text and direction.
Can I have more than one game on a page?
Yes. Every shortcode or widget instance is independent.
Who can see a game?
Published games are shown to everyone. Drafts and private games are shown only to users who can edit them.
Where is progress saved?
In the player's browser (localStorage). Nothing is sent to the server. Editing a game's words resets saved progress for that game.
What happens to my games if I delete the plugin?
They are kept, unless you tick "Delete all games when the plugin is deleted" in Palette Word Connections → Settings. The plugin's settings are always removed.
