Doesn't WordPress do this itself now?
Partly. Since WordPress 6.4, sites installed on 6.4 or later have attachment pages turned off by WordPress itself (the wp_attachment_pages_enabled option), and their URLs redirect to the file. Sites installed before 6.4 keep their attachment pages, and WordPress has no screen to turn them off.
This plugin removes attachment pages on any site, whatever that option says, and sends a 404 or 410 instead of redirecting. The settings screen shows how WordPress's own option is set on your site.
