- Chat with your site: a chat workspace in wp-admin with streaming responses, markdown rendering and conversation history. Ask the AI to write a post, update a page, moderate a comment or pull up site info.
- Connect Claude, ChatGPT and more: your site becomes an MCP server. Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients connect with a single API key, no extra configuration.
- Manage content and media: posts, pages, comments, media, menus and taxonomies, all callable by the AI through one registry.
- Block editor and Site Editor: read and edit the blocks of any post or page, use block patterns, and update block theme templates and template parts. Every change keeps a revision.

- Upload the
smarto-smart-mcpfolder to/wp-content/plugins/, or install through the WordPress plugins screen. - Activate the plugin through the Plugins screen.
- Go to Smart MCP → Getting Started and add your AI provider API key.
- Click Test connection, then save.
- Open the Smart MCP chat and start asking.

Which AI providers are supported?
OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google Gemini, OpenRouter and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Add your API key on the AI Providers page. Keys are encrypted at rest and never shown again.
What MCP clients can connect?
Any client that supports the Model Context Protocol, for example Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor. Enable external access in Settings, generate an API key, then connect to https://your-site.com/wp-json/smart-mcp/v1/mcp (or use the discovery file https://your-site.com/wp-json/smart-mcp/v1/.well-known/mcp.json).
What can external MCP clients do?
External MCP clients are limited to content work: posts, pages, Elementor and block editor design, media, comments, taxonomies, store content and read-only site information. They cannot install, activate or update plugins and themes, manage users, change site settings or modify site code. External access is off by default and only works after you turn it on and generate a credential on the Connect page. By default, requests from an external client run as a non-administrative user who can edit posts (for example an Editor). You can choose that account, or create a dedicated Editor account, under Smart MCP > Connect > Account used by AI clients.
My site only has an administrator account. Can AI clients still edit pages?
Yes. On Smart MCP > Connect, tick the confirmation box under "Use my administrator account" and turn it on. AI clients then create and edit content under your name, but stay limited to the same content tools an Editor can use: plugins, themes, users, settings and site code remain out of reach. Every action is recorded in the Audit Log, and you can turn it off at any time.
Is this safe?
Every available tool requires the appropriate WordPress capability, and actions that require approval must be explicitly approved before they run.
Can I chat from Telegram?
Yes. Set up a Telegram bot on the Telegram Bot page, and you can chat with your site from Telegram.
Does it work on multisite?
Not yet. Multisite support is planned.
Is there a Pro version?
Yes. Smart MCP Pro is an optional add-on that installs next to this plugin and adds tools for managing and maintaining the whole site. Nothing in the free plugin is locked or limited, and the free plugin keeps working the same with or without Pro. See the Free and Pro comparison.
