Talkie App adds an accessibility button to your website. Visitors open a menu with it and adjust the website to what they need. Their choices are remembered in their own browser, without cookies and without an account.
For visitors
- Read aloud: click a paragraph to start there, or have the whole page read aloud. With word highlighting, pause and speed control.
- Translate: translate a piece of text into another language and have it read aloud. In Chrome and Edge this happens on the device itself.
- Profiles: Low vision, Screen reader, Colour blind, Dyslexia, Motor impairment, Concentration and Epilepsy switch on the right combination in one go.
- Contrast (high, dark, inverted) and colour saturation.
- Larger text, text spacing, line height, legible font, dyslexia font.
- Highlight links and headings, large cursor, reading guide, reading mask.
- Stop animations, hide images.
- Menu with bottom navigation: Accessibility and Settings (language, reading speed). Available in English, Dutch, German and French. Works with keyboard and screen reader.
- Generator for the accessibility statement, following the Dutch government model, with the shortcode
[talkie_verklaring]. - Read-aloud button in your content with the shortcode
[talkie]. Without parameters it reads the article it sits in; withtarget,idorclassa specific part; with enclosed text it speaks that text. - Position, size and features are adjustable. The button has the recognisable Talkie colour; with Premium you choose the colour of your own brand and your own logo. Works with every theme and with caching plugins.
- Lightweight: one script, no jQuery. The free version makes no requests to other servers.
- Your own colour and your own logo (or no logo) for the widget.
- Natural Google Cloud voices (Wavenet and Chirp 3 HD) for reading aloud, with word-by-word highlighting. Audio is cached per paragraph.
- Chat: a chatbot visitors can ask anything, by typing or speaking, with answers in plain language that are also read aloud. Choose between two modes: help with everything (letters, rules, words, daily life) or customer service (only questions about your organisation).
- Customer service from your own website: for every question Talkie searches your knowledge base and the published pages and posts of your site, and adds a link to the right page below the answer. You fill in the knowledge base yourself, as questions and answers, in its own tab. Everything stays stored in your own WordPress.
- Everything in plain language (B1), based only on the text of the page and your notes. Nothing about visitors is stored: no questions, no conversations, no profiles.
- Processing in the EU (Google Cloud, region Netherlands) via Talkie Cloud. You activate Premium with a licence code that you receive by email after your order.

- Install and activate the plugin.
- The button appears straight away at the bottom right of your website.
- Go to Talkie in the admin menu to change position, size and features.
- Fill in the Statement tab and put
[talkie_verklaring]on a page.

Does the plugin set cookies?
No. Visitor preferences are kept in the localStorage of their own browser. Nothing is sent to your server or to Talkie.
Which voices are used for reading aloud?
The free version uses the voices offered by the visitor's browser and device. The quality differs per device. Natural cloud voices are part of Talkie App Premium.
Does it work with my theme and page builder?
Yes. The widget lives in its own Shadow DOM, so your theme and the widget do not affect each other's styles. Page adjustments work on every theme; for themes that set font sizes in pixels the widget scales each element separately.
Does this make the website WCAG compliant?
No, no widget does. Talkie App is a tool for visitors and helps you write an honest statement. The accessibility of the website itself remains your job.
Can I change the colour of the button?
In the free version the button has the Talkie colour (azure). With Talkie App Premium you choose your own colour; text colour and contrast are set correctly automatically. You can then also replace the logo at the top of the menu with your own logo, or leave it out.
What happens to the questions visitors ask?
Nothing is stored. The question and the text of the page go to Talkie Cloud, the answer comes back, and that is it. There is no log, no profile and no cookie. The conversation only stays in the visitor's own browser tab until it is closed.
How does the [talkie] shortcode work?
[talkie]places a read-aloud button that reads the article it sits in.[talkie target=".intro"],[talkie id="blogpost"]or[talkie class="content"]reads a specific part of the page.[talkie lang="en-US"]Text[/talkie]speaks the enclosed text without showing it.btn="…"sets the text on the button.[darkmode btn="Dark mode"]switches the dark mode of the widget on or off.
.btn-talkie and .btn-darkmode are still on the buttons, so your own styling still applies.
How do I open the menu with the keyboard?
Tab to the button and press Enter, or use the shortcut Alt + Shift + A.
