Media Rename — OrbitStem lets you safely rename images, videos, PDFs, and any media files in the WordPress Media Library without breaking your site — and automatically cleans up filenames the moment files are uploaded.
Before you rename, you see an impact report and dry-run preview showing where the file is used. When applied, the plugin performs batched, resumable URL replacement across posts, pages, custom fields, page builders (Elementor, Divi, Bricks, Breakdance), and site options. Old file URLs automatically 301 redirect to the new filenames to protect your Google rankings and external backlinks.

This plugin does not contact external servers, track users, or collect personal data. All processing runs locally on your WordPress site.

Who can rename media files?
Administrators by default (manage_options). Developers can customize this with the orbitstem_rename_capability filter:

Will renaming break external links or search engine rankings?
No! Media Rename automatically creates 301 Permanent Redirects for all renamed files. If Google or an external blog links to the old image URL, WordPress redirects them directly to the new file URL.
How does batched URL replacement work?
Instead of trying to update all database tables in a single PHP request (which causes timeouts on large sites), Media Rename processes posts, postmeta, options, termmeta, and usermeta in manageable chunks. A real-time progress bar shows completion percentage, and WP-Cron acts as a safety net if your browser window closes.
Can I rollback any rename from the past?
Yes. Navigate to Media → Media Rename → Rename History. Every rename event is logged, and you can click Rollback on any individual entry to restore the original file and reverse site-wide URL updates.
